Common Green Darner, these are the large dragonflies that are commonly seen EVERYWHERE Twelve-spotted Skimmer, large, easily recognizable Common White-tail, male. White abdomen, black on middle 1/3 of wing. Widow Skimmer will have black on the inner 1/3 of wing, and white in the middle 1/3, outer 1/3 of wing of both species is clear. Common White-tail, female. VERY similar to female 12-spotted skimmer, but note the white on abdonmen is more "dashes" than a continious line as on 12-spotted, and last 3 segments are tapered Slaty Skimmer, male. Relativily large, dark blue body, dark face, spot on stigma with otherwise clear wings, and dark cerci. Be careful for Great Blue Skimmer, which will have white face, and darker markings on the wings. Great Blue Skimmer, male. White face, blue eyes, black stripe at base of wings, black nodal, and stigma spots, and black at wing tips (kind of visable) Eastern Pondhawk, female. Distinctive on the island. No other dragonfly looks like this one. Calico Pennant (left), and eastern amberwing (right). Males of both species. Female e. amberwing look simliar to pennant, but size and marking should be easy to notice. Calico Pennant. Note wing markings, and red triangles on black abdoment. Blue Dasher, male. Common, small-medium sized, white face, green eyes, black tip to abdomen, with white cerci. Note green, and black striping on thorax, Blue Dasher, female. Note the same wing pattern, white cerci (tip of tail), and tip of tail. Yellow-legged Meadowhawk, female. Seen along path/roadway, tough to ID, used the knob on S9 to ID it to species.
